Quick answer
A single freelancer in Oklahoma with $75,000 of profit pays about $2,591 of Oklahoma income tax in 2026 on top of about $15,495 of federal tax (self-employment tax of 15.3% on 92.35% of profit plus income tax), keeping about $56,914. At $50,000 the state bill is about $1,546; at $100,000, about $3,637.
Oklahoma cut its income tax for 2026. A 2025 law, HB 2764, merged the brackets and lowered the top rate to 4.5%, and almost all of a freelancer’s income falls in that bracket. Oklahoma’s estimated payment rule is also friendlier than the IRS’s. Here is what an Oklahoma freelancer owes for 2026.

Oklahoma’s 2026 brackets
For a single filer, Oklahoma taxes the first $3,750 of taxable income at 0%, the next $1,150 at 2.5%, the next $2,300 at 3.5%, and everything above $7,200 at 4.5%. Married couples filing jointly get brackets twice as wide. The law also allows further 0.25-point rate cuts in later years if state revenue meets certain benchmarks.
Oklahoma starts from your federal adjusted gross income, so Schedule C business expenses and the deduction for half of your self-employment tax reduce Oklahoma income too. The federal QBI deduction doesn’t carry over. Instead, a single filer gets Oklahoma’s $6,350 standard deduction and a $1,000 exemption.
Estimated payments — the 70% rule
- You must make quarterly payments with Form OW-8-ES if you expect your Oklahoma tax to exceed your withholding by $500 or more, and you expect withholding to cover less than the smaller of 70% of this year’s tax or 100% of last year’s tax.
- Note the 70%: Oklahoma’s current-year safe harbor is lower than the 90% the IRS uses.
- Due dates match the IRS: April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. You can pay electronically at OkTAP (some payment methods carry a convenience fee) or mail the coupon.
- No underpayment interest applies if the tax shown on your return is less than $1,000.
Size your federal payments with the quarterly estimated tax calculator, then add one quarter of your expected Oklahoma tax to each date.
If you have an LLC
- A single-member LLC taxed as a sole proprietor reports its profit on your personal Oklahoma return.
- Every Oklahoma LLC files an annual certificate with the Secretary of State on the anniversary of its registration. The fee is $25. An LLC that doesn’t file within 60 days of the due date loses its good standing.
- Weighing an S corp election? The payroll-tax savings are federal, and Oklahoma still taxes the profit that passes through to you.
How much to set aside
Enter 4.5 in the state field of the tax set-aside calculator. The standard deduction, the exemption and the 0% bracket bring your real Oklahoma cost a bit below 4.5%, so this leaves a small cushion.
Sales tax
Oklahoma sales tax applies to goods and to a specific list of services and transactions, such as telecommunications, admissions and lodging. Most freelance and professional services aren’t on that list. If you sell physical products, register with the Oklahoma Tax Commission.
